I could not have said this better myself. Bravo Chris Matthews for telling the truth on this. Tingle gone from leg.

The result of Obama’s treachery here will almost certainly be the replacement of Mubarak by an anti-American, hardline Muslim regime. There are no democratic institutions or traditions in Egypt. The radical Muslim Brotherhood is the only organized alternative, and it is poised to pounce on this opportunity to seize power.

That’s right Peggy. Mubarak is thuggish and far from ideal. The issue is: what’s going to replace him? Most likely, a radical Muslim regime that will be far, far worse. If Egypt has an election, it will likely be the last election.

All else aside, we are facing in Egypt the consequences of thirty years of benign neglect, keeping Mubarak in power because of his role in the region (Israel has every reason to be thankful for him!) but at the same time implicitly consenting to his totalitarianism and the corruption in his government. There was ample time to work on “softening” measures; we did not do it.

Obama cannot be held to blame for that, but he can be held to blame for continuing the “do nothing” posture during his presidency, his administration’s sponsorship of movement.org (apparently quite active with internet support of the uprising) and his overall tilt in favor of Islam and his apologetics for militant Islam.
