Can’t Two Things Be True? The Iraq War Was a Mistake. It Was Also a Mistake to Abandon Iraq to ISIS.
They were both wrong. Both their policies were disastrous for U.S. interests.
The verdict is in on George W. Bush’s decision to oust Saddam Hussein.
We found no WMD program, no nuclear weapons program under Saddam in Iraq – the pretense for going to war. As thuggish a dictator as he was, he turned out to be a bulwark against Islamic extremism.
He was no threat to the United States. He was actually an asset.
Saddam hated al Qaeda and the Islamic radicals as much as we do. He did a superb job at killing them.
This is why W’s father, George H.W. Bush made the decision in Operation Desert Storm to push Saddam out of Kuwait, back to Baghdad, and to leave him there.
Reagan also understood Saddam’s value.
He was a counter to the even worse Iran — which is why we sided with Saddam in the Iran-Iraq War.
We had an alliance with Incredibly awful Joseph Stalin against the even worse Adolf Hitler.
Not that Saddam was even close to as bad as these fellows.
But in 2003 W Bush made the decision to go to Baghdad to get rid of Saddam, and set up a flimsy replacement government that needed a permanent U.S. presence to survive.
Dumb decision to replace Saddam with this un-serious government.
We’d be far better off with Saddam still in place.
But even dumber is Obama’s decision to abandon Iraq to ISIS.
Obama compounded one mistake with an even worse blunder.
Pulling all U.S. forces out of Iraq suddenly and completely left a power vaccum that was filled by ISIS.
Obama is doing the same in Afghanistan.
Just about everyone agrees we had to go to Afghanistan to get rid of the Taliban and hunt down bin Laden.
But we’re now leaving Afghanistan to the Taliban – which no doubt will also become a safe haven for ISIS and every other fanatical Islamic group.
Two years ago, Obama thought it was a great idea to arm rebels in Syria in the hope that they might overthrow the regime of Bashar al-Assad – another Saddam-like strongman dictator.
The problem is these rebels included ISIS and other fanatical Islamists.
Obama claimed he thoroughly vetted the rebels and was only arming “moderate” Islamic rebels.
Are there any “moderate” Islamic guerrilla rebels?
If you believe that, I have horse-racing bet portfolio I’d like you to invest in.
Now Obama is bombing ISIS in Syria, who he used to think it was a good idea to arm.
Meanwhile, ISIS is riding around in U.S. tanks with U.S. rockets and weapons beheading people.
Obama also thought it was a great idea to help the Islamists get rid of the dictator in Libya Muammar Gaddafi. So now Libya is in a state of anarchy and terrorists are using the former U.S. Embassy as their headquarters.
Obama also sided with the Muslim Brotherhood against U.S. ally Hosni Mubarak – another strongman dictator. But at least he was a friend of the U.S. and not out to erase Israel from the map.
The good news in Egypt is that the Muslim Brotherhood has since been thrown out by the Egyptian military. So we have another Mubarak-style regime in Egypt, no thanks to Obama.
But that’s good for the United States.
The truth is Democracy doesn’t work in Islamic countries — at least not those that take the Koran seriously.
Sharia Law and democracy are incompatible.
If you have a vote in these countries, you will have one election one time.
If Saudi Arabia had an election, al Qaeda or ISIS would likely win. We don’t like the corrupt Royal Family that runs Saudi Arabia. But they’re better than the alternative.
We don’t like Assad, but he’s better than what would replace him. We certainly did not like Saddam or Gaddafi. But look what we have now. These countries have become Jihadist Wonderlands.
George W. Bush made one mistake. And it was a biggie – the Iraq War.
He should have just left Saddam in place. Saddam was a “managaeble problem,” to borrow the words of Obama.
Actually, he wasn’t the problem. Turns out he was a pretty good solution to radical Islam, which he hated.
So Bush made a big strategic mistake. Huge.
But Obama has taken the wrong side in literally every conflict in the Middle East. Not once has he chosen the correct side.
He sides with Hamas over Israel. He sides with the Muslim Brotherhood over Mubarak. He sides with “moderate elements” of the Taliban over Hamid Karzai in Afghanistan.
There are no “moderate elements” of the Taliban.
Obama has spent much of his Presidency trashing the Iraqi government — I guess as a way to justify America’s exit from Iraq.
As a result of Obama’s policies , ISIS now controls an area of Iraq and Syria the size of Indiana.
As flawed as George W. Bush was, do you think this would have ever happened if he were still President?
The entire Middle East is now in flames now because of Obama. We have no friends in the Middle East anymore, except Israel – who Obama constantly trashes.
Is Jordan a friend?
It doesn’t matter much because they’re in the process of being overrun by ISIS.
For what it’s worth, George W. Bush assembled a coalition of 48 countries to take on Saddam — the misguided venture though it was.
Barack Obama has persuaded a grand total of nine countries(including the great nation of Albania) to join his coalition to take on ISIS.
Great Britain and Germany have said “no thanks” to Obama’s idea of bombing ISIS in Syria.
That’s how much confidence our allies have in Obama.
Barack Obama makes Jimmy Carter look like Winston Churchill by comparison.
Who the Hell Would Not Have Killed Bin Laden? It’s No-Brainer. But Obama Dithered for 16 Hours Over Whether to Give the Green Light to Let the SEALs Kill the Terrorist.
U.K. DAILY MAIL: Serving and former US Navy SEALs have slammed President Barack Obama for taking the credit for killing Osama bin Laden and accused him of using Special Forces operators as ‘ammunition’ for his re-election campaign.
The SEALs spoke out to MailOnline after the Obama campaign released an ad entitled ‘One Chance’.
In it President Bill Clinton is featured saying that Mr Obama took ‘the harder and the more honourable path’ in ordering that bin Laden be killed. The words ‘Which path would Mitt Romney have taken?’ are then displayed.
Besides the ad, the White House is marking the first anniversary of the SEAL Team Six raid that killed bin Laden inside his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan with a series of briefings and an NBC interview in the Situation Room designed to highlight the ‘gutsy call’ made by the President.
Obama calls British Embassy the “English Embassy.” Does he know the difference between Great Britain and England?
But the media keeps telling us Rick Perry doesn’t know much
It’s also possible Obama was intentionally insulting America’s closest ally — in the same vein as returning the bust of Winston Churchill, giving the Queen an iPod as a gift, and revealing the U.K.’s nuclear submarine locations to the Russians.
THE HERITAGE FOUNDATION: It is gratifying to see President Barack Obama condemn the disgraceful storming of the British Embassy in Tehran by thugs acting at the behest of the Iranian regime. After all, Obama has been notoriously slow in the past to criticise the brutal actions of the Iranian government after initially extending the hand of friendship to it. But did he really need to make another embarrassing foreign policy gaffe while doing so?
In a press conference this evening, the president referred in stumbling fashion to the “English Embassy” in Iran instead of the British Embassy. One can only imagine the kind of howls of derision that would greet any presidential contender if that kind of basic error were made before, say, the editorial board of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. You can watch the video above.
Oops! Obama touts Jobs Bill at bridge that won’t qualify. Workers would not have been hired until 2015.
LA TIMES: You know all those rusting bridges that President Obama wants to spend billions more dollars repairing to allegedly stimulate the economy?
He’s headed out to one today which he’s described as a “bridge that needs repair between Ohio and Kentucky that’s on one of the busiest trucking routes in North America.” It is on a busy trucking route, spanning the Ohio River between Covington, Ky., and Cincinnati.
It’s the Brent Spence Bridge. It doesn’t really need repairs. It’s got decades of good life left in its steel spans. It’s just overloaded. The bridge was built to handle 85,000 cars and trucks a day, which seemed like a lot back during construction in the Nixon era.
Oh, the incompetence
CINCINATI.COM: A presidential visit is a big deal, but will it actually guarantee funding for the aged and overused Brent Spence Bridge?
Not really, say transportation experts and highway officials.
That’s not how highway funding works. When you consider the partisan bickering over the president’s jobs bill and the stalled federal transportation bill, the bridge looks no closer to getting the $2.4 billion needed to replace it than before it caught the White House’s attention.
First, there’s the president’s jobs bill, which is the reason for his trip. In his joint address to Congress on Sept. 8, Obama called on Congress to immediately pass his plan. But the bill has received a lukewarm reception on the Hill, where even Democrats haven’t rallied around it.
White House email warned of risky Solyndra venture; worried about potential political damage with 2012 coming up
WASHINGTON POST: A White House official fretted privately that the Obama administration could suffer serious political damage if it gave additional taxpayer support to the beleaguered solar-panel company Solyndra, according to newly released e-mails.
The firm had burned through millions of dollars and in January still tottered near collapse. The official wanted the government’s top budget official to warn Obama’s energy secretary about the risk, according to the e-mails.
NEW YORK TIMES: The 1,100 full- and part-time employees who were abruptly laid off two weeks ago aren’t the only ones whose paychecks have been affected by the sudden and dramatic failure of bankrupt solar energy company, Solyndra Inc.
Because for its brief lifespan, Solyndra proved to be pretty good for the lobbying community.
According to records filed with the Clerk of the House and a search of disclosure forms compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics, Solyndra spent nearly $1.9 million on lobbying activities over a period of 43 months from 2008 to 2011.
About $1 million of that was earned by the company’s two in-house lobbyists, Joseph Pasetti and Victoria Sanville, over an 18-month period from 2010 until this year. But Solyndra has also had several big-name lobbying shops on its payroll, including established powerhouses Dutko Worldwide and Holland and Knight, which began representing the then-fledgling company in 2008.
This “green jobs” scheme just isn’t working out as planned. Taxpayers hold the bag.
NATIONAL JOURNAL: The Obama administration is in a race against the clock to close by month’s end more than a dozen renewable-energy loan guarantees totaling $9 billion. Of that, just over $3 billion would come directly from the federal government’s coffers.
The administration now has two weeks to finalize the process amid an escalating political battle over a federally backed solar company spiraling into bankruptcy and facing an FBI probe. President Obama once praised the company, California-based Solyndra, as “the true engine of economic growth.”
At a House hearing Wednesday, there was bipartisan concern about risking more taxpayer dollars on renewable energy projects that ultimately fail. While Republicans’ rhetoric was more heated, Democrats agreed it is a critical issue.
“Taxpayers have over $500 million at risk as a result of Solyndra’s bankruptcy,” said House Energy and Commerce ranking member Henry Waxman, D-Calif. “We need to understand what happened and how we can avoid future losses.”
In 2009, Solyndra was the first company to receive a federal clean-energy loan guarantee as part of the stimulus package. The Fremont, Calif.-based maker of solar photovoltaic systems then received photo-op visits from Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, and Energy Secretary Steven Chu, all touting the job-generating potential of solar and other renewable energy industries. But on Aug. 31, Solyndra shuttered operations, laying off its 1,100 workers while seeking Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
Under the Recovery Act that Obama signed into law in February 2009, the Energy Department’s loan guarantee office was given roughly $6 billion to help cover the financing of renewable energy companies applying for loans both with the Treasury Department’s Federal Financing Bank and with private lenders, such as banks. Congress has since peeled away about half of that for other purposes and left the department with just $2.4 billion for the renewable loan guarantee program.
That $2.4 billion allocated to the Energy Department pays for each renewable energy project’s “credit subsidy,” a fee worth usually around 10 percent of a loan and which helps defray costs if the loan fails. The Energy Department doesn’t disclose the credit subsidy rate of loans the government guarantees, so it’s unclear how much of that $2.4 billion remains.
Denies Biden called Tea Partiers “terrorists.”
Obama, increasingly, just does not seem to have a grip on reality.
The Dow has dropped 11% since the debt deal last Monday.
